US Women – Pesach 5777/2017
With Pesach and Spring on the horizon the thoughts of many people turn to renewal, growth and development. The last USW article spoke of the many achievements made by US Women in changing the perceptions of what women are doing, and can do in our Shuls. In the last few years there have been many positive developments in woman’s involvement in the US, changes such as women taking on lay management positions, and women saying Kaddish. Under the guidance of the Chief Rabbi, boys and girls will work together towards their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, and the first cohort of the Chief Rabbi’s Ma’ayan program for advanced female educators, will be graduating in a years’ time. These developments are ones that USW is proud to be associated with.
We at USW wish that the role of woman with in the US will keep on developing, into an even more active engagement. The US Women executive together with the women Trustees of the US work hard to present the opinions for women within the community to EFFECT change where possible, within the bounds of Halacha. As a woman within the US community it is our responsibility to embrace the opportunities available to us and to engage with our Rabbinical teams to find out the numerous ways we can help grow our personal relationship not just with the community but with our Judaism. We would appreciate your thoughts and comments. Please contact Julia Hammell on JHammell@theus.org.uk with all your thoughts, ideas and suggestions. Help us to help you.
On June 21 Gillian Merron, Chief Executive of the Board of Deputies, will be the guest speaker at the annual USW dinner. Please save the date as we really look forward to seeing you all there.
The USW quiz was a great success, with 200 women coming to Woodside Park. Cockfosters and N Southgate shul were the victors and we hope to hold the quiz there in November.
By now you will have received the guidelines on how and when to Bentch Ha’Gomel. This prayer is for people who have been in a dangerous situation, been very unwell or for women who have just given birth. If you feel you would like to thank God for helping you through such challenging times, then make sure you let your Rabbi know and he will help facilitate this.
Finally, it is with great delight that we wish Dalia Cramer Mazal Tov for being awarded the BEM in recognition of all her hard work with and for women in the Anglo Jewish community. Thank you Dalia.
Wishing you all a Happy and Kasher Pesach
Jacqui Zinkin on behalf of the executive of US Women.
US Women quiz attracts 200 @ WPS 2016
Last Wednesday US Women hosted their Annual Quiz at Woodside Park US. 200 attendees from 20 different communities came together to meet peers from other communities and put their knowledge to the test during an enjoyable evening.
The quiz itself was a closely-fought contest as each team vied to be the winners on the night. The evening went down to the wire as Woodside Park and Cockfosters & N Southgate needed a tie-breaker to decide the victor, with the eventual winners on the night being the Cockfosters & N Southgate team.
A raffle was also held on the evening which raised money for worthy causes.
Jacqui Zinkin and Claire Lemer, Co-Chairs of US Women, said: “Once again, the US Women Annual Quiz was a huge success. It is a wonderful opportunity for our members to come together and create and reignite friendships with individuals from other communities that they may not otherwise have a chance to meet. Congratulations to the winners on the night from Cockfosters & N Southgate US and a huge thank you to our hosts Woodside Park US.”
Many thanks to US Women would like to thank Anne Shisler for organising the quiz and welcome Ahavas Yisrael who attended for the first time.
