Our Second Honeymoon

by Reverend Michael Plaskow MBE

Phyllis and I were married in Woodside Park Synagogue in London on 20th June 1961 which means we celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary this year. The day after our wedding, we went by boat and train to Nice in the South of France for our honeymoon.

As many of you know we live exactly opposite the Seasons Hotel. How very coincidental for us to see a large banner outside the hotel welcoming the Mayor of Nice and his delegation to Netanya. Phyllis and I saw Miriam Feirburg, our Mayor of Netanya having a photo taken with the Mayor of Nice at the front of the hotel.

The thought went through my mind that I should go to the hotel and personally welcome him stating how his visit reminded us of our fabulous honeymoon in Nice, his home town. So I popped over to the hotel and he greeted me like a long lost brother. We chatted for quite some time. You will never believe what I am now about to relate to you. He invited us to enjoy a second honeymoon "On the house". He paid for our air fare from Tel Aviv to Nice and three days at Hotel Westminster on the Promenade des Anglais. This was the hotel we stayed at during our honeymoon. That was not all. He also arranged sumptuous kosher meals under the auspices of the Nice Rabbinate and a guided tour to two places we saw fifty years ago namely Eze and Grasse where there are perfume factories. That really brought back memories. We returned home very happy and I said to Phyllis that all this came about because I crossed the road to see the Mayor of Nice at the Seasons Hotel.

Then my alarm rang and it was 5.45am - time to get dressed and go to shul. As the Bible would say "And behold that night it was a dream".
